Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency is looking for people to join the effort.

Musk stated that the compensation was “zero.” So is this a real job opportunity?

DOGE did not answer any questions about payment or whether you need an X account to apply.
The new quasi-department that Elon Musk is setting up to stamp out wasteful government spending has attracted a lot of attention – but how exactly does someone apply for a job there? And is it actually a paid job?
So far it is not entirely clear.
What we currently know about a possible position in the new unofficial Ministry of Government Efficiency comes from a post on the newly created X account. The post states that DOGE – named after a cryptocurrency linked to Musk – is looking for the “top 1%” of applicants who have a “super high IQ” and are willing to work more than 80 hours per week work.
It’s unclear whether the demanding role would come with a paycheck.
In response to a user’s post, Musk wrote on He ended the comment with a crying and laughing emoji – which didn’t make it entirely clear whether he was joking about the no-compensation part.
Musk did not respond to an email from BI and the DOGE account did not respond to a direct message. The Trump transition team also did not respond to an email requesting further details.
We are very grateful to the thousands of Americans who have expressed interest in helping us with DOGE. We no longer need part-time idea providers. We need small government revolutionaries with super-high IQs who are willing to work 80+ hours a week for inglorious cost cutting. If that’s the case…

Earlier this week, Brian Hughes, a spokesman for the Trump transition team, said in a statement to BI: “As President Trump said, Elon Musk is a genius, an innovator and has literally made history by developing creative, modern and efficient systems .” .”
Representatives for Vivek Ramaswamy, whom new President Trump picked to co-head DOGE alongside Musk, also did not respond to a request for comment.
Other questions about the possible job advertisement include, among other things, how to apply. DOGE’s post on X encourages potential applicants to send their resumes via direct message to his X account.
But as some X users pointed out, the department’s direct messages apparently weren’t initially accessible to users who didn’t have a paid X subscription. The account’s DMs were open to any X user as of Friday afternoon – and BI was able to successfully send a message to the account without a paid subscription.
Still, a job seeker would need to have an X account – even if just a free one – to send a direct message to DOGE. That means if someone doesn’t already have an account on the platform Musk owns, the person would have to open one – at least at this point – in order to apply for the job.
It is not clear if there will be an official DOGE website with a more traditional application process.
